What You Need to Know to Get Started with Diabetes Education in Cullman

You don’t need to have it all figured out right now. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or seeking better control, our team is here to help you take the next step. At Cullman Diabetes Center, we offer ADA-accredited diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES), plus training in insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), and Medical Nutrition Therapy.

How to Get Started

Most new patients need a referral from their doctor, but don’t let that stop you from reaching out. You can request an appointment using our short form. Once we hear from you, our team will help figure out what kind of referral (if any) is needed.

What to Expect

You’ll meet one-on-one with a care and education specialist to discuss your goals and challenges. From there, we’ll tailor your experience, whether that means diabetes classes, nutrition guidance, or tech training like insulin pumps or CGM.

Who You'll Work With

You’ll be supported by a team of registered nurses, dietitians, and diabetes care specialists who follow the national standards for diabetes self-management. We meet you where you are without judgment or pressure.

Common Questions from New & Prospective Patients

Navigating diabetes can feel overwhelming, especially in the beginning. That’s why we’ve answered some of the most common questions we hear from new patients. If you’re unsure about insurance, referrals, or what to expect from your first visit, we’ll make the process feel simple, supportive, and stress-free.

In most cases, yes, but not always. Many of our services (like DSMES or Medical Nutrition Therapy) are covered by insurance and require a referral from your doctor or nurse practitioner.

  • If you’re unsure, just fill out our appointment request form.
  • Our staff will walk you through what’s needed based on your goals and insurance.

DSMES stands for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support. It’s a structured, evidence-based program accredited by the American Diabetes Association.

  • Step 1: One-on-one assessment with a registered dietitian.
  • Step 2: Group class covering aspects of diabetes like meal planning, physical activity, glucose monitoring, and reducing risks.
  • Step 3: Follow-up visits for more personalized support.

The goal is to help you feel confident managing your diabetes every day.

We offer training and ongoing education for people using insulin pumps or continuous glucose monitors. You may still need a referral, depending on your insurance.

Fill out our form to start the process—we’ll help clarify what’s needed for your situation.

Costs vary based on your insurance:

  • Medicare covers DSMES and MNT for eligible patients.
  • Many private plans also offer full or partial coverage.

We’ll verify benefits and let you know what to expect before your first visit.

We focus exclusively on education and empowerment, supplementing your primary care treatment plans like medications and exams. That means more time, more personalized support, and a team that truly understands the daily challenges of living with diabetes. You’ll never feel like “just another patient” here.

Our team’s focus is solely on education, but we work closely with Morgan McHugh and Alicia Lee, Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners and diabetes specialists. While our education team focuses on self-management training and support, Morgan and Alicia are available to help patients with medication adjustments, insulin pump management, and other aspects of diabetes care if needed.

If your doctor refers you for education and we discover you need additional help with medical management, you may have appointments with Morgan or Alicia in addition to your sessions at the diabetes center. Everyone here is focused on helping you live well with diabetes and connecting you with the resources you need.
